The Perfect Mint Julep Granita—Fabulous (Boozy) Kentucky Derby Dessert!

/ Friday, May 3, 2013

The Kentucky Derby is this weekend! I'm not a gambler so the race is wasted on me—I am, however, a huge Mint Julep fan. Head over to the Good Housekeeping website for the 5 Easy Mint Julep–Flavored Dessert recipes I developed with this weekend in mind. I love 'em all but I'm kind of obsessed with the fluffy Mint Julep Granita (above). If I were home, I'd totally serve it to friends in silver julep cups. (Sigh) I guess one of you will just have to do it, instead...

MINT JULEP GRANITA
SERVES: 6

Microwave 1/3 c. sugar and 1/4 c. water in med. bowl on High 20 seconds; stir until sugar dissolves. Whisk in 3 1/2 c. limeade, 1/4 c. fresh lime juice and 2 Tbsp. bourbon and 1 cup mint leaves; let sit 15 minutes. Pour into a 13-by-9-inch metal baking dish through a fine-mesh sieve; cover with plastic wrap and freeze at least 4 hr. or overnight. Scrape granita into pieces with the back of a spoon. Serve in chilled glasses.

  1. I've never tried a mint julep before, but it sounds gooooooood! I guess I need to buy me some bourbon this weekend :)
